Preparing for Plastic Surgery: How to Set Yourself Up for a Smooth Recovery

A thoughtful approach to healing, comfort, and confidence

As we move into what I often think of as a busy season for surgery, many patients find themselves feeling a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation.

That’s completely normal.

While the procedure itself is important, what many patients don’t initially realize is that recovery plays an equally significant role in achieving a beautiful, long-lasting result.

One of the most effective ways to ease anxiety — and improve your experience — is through intentional preparation.

Think of it as setting up your future self for success.

Why Preparation for Plastic Surgery Matters

Healing is not something that happens in a single day. It’s a process that unfolds over weeks, supported by rest, nutrition, and a calm environment.

When you prepare ahead of time, you allow yourself to:

  • Focus fully on rest and recovery

  • Reduce unnecessary stress or last-minute errands

  • Stay organized with medications and instructions

  • Create a space that supports both physical and emotional healing

Preparation doesn’t eliminate the unknown, but it makes the experience feel more controlled, more comfortable, and more manageable.

What to do BEFORE Cosmetic Surgery

Preparation begins well before the day of your procedure. The weeks leading up to surgery are an opportunity to support your body in a meaningful, intentional way.

Nutrition

  • Prioritize protein at each meal and aim for a diet rich in fruits and vegetables

  • Limit intake of alcohol and ultra-processed foods

  • Discuss any supplements you take with your surgeon

Sleep

  • Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep per night

  • Sleep plays a major role in healing and immune function

Movement

  • Prepare your body for recovery with about 30 minutes of activity daily focusing your strength training and flexibity on muscle groups you will use after surgery

  • If you are having a tummy tuck work on your deep core with pilates or yoga

Building Your Surgical Prep Bag

As your surgery date approaches, I encourage patients to create a dedicated recovery space or “prep bag” with everything they may need within easy reach.

This allows you to focus on rest rather than logistics once you return home.

Medications

Fill all prescriptions ahead of time and keep them organized.

  • Prescribed medications

  • Over-the-counter options like acetaminophen and arnica

  • Stool softeners

Clear labeling and instructions make the first few days much easier.

Healing Support: Nutrition & Supplements

Your body needs the right support to heal well. Continue your preop diet.

  • Protein-rich foods

  • Fruits and vegetables

  • Adequate hydration

Some patients choose supplements such as magnesium, arnica, zinc, or vitamin C — always follow your surgeon’s guidance.

Post-Operative Instructions

Keep all instructions in one place for easy access.

These include:

  • Incision care

  • Activity restrictions

  • Showering guidelines

  • Scar management

  • Follow-up appointments

Comfort & Clothing

Small details make a meaningful difference:

  • Loose, front-opening clothing

  • Soft, breathable fabrics

  • Surgical bras or compression garments

  • Extra pillows for elevation

Hygiene Essentials

During early recovery:

  • Gentle wipes or washcloths

  • Dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner

  • Basic wound care supplies

Nourishment & Hydration

Prepare simple, nourishing options:

  • Soups and smoothies

  • Easy-to-reheat meals

  • Protein-rich snacks

  • A water bottle within reach

Entertainment & Emotional Comfort

Create a calm, supportive environment:

  • Books, magazines, or shows

  • Music or calming playlists

  • A comfortable, quiet space

Recovery is also a time to slow down and reset.

A Thoughtful Approach to Recovery

Some patients enjoy assembling their own supplies, while others prefer pre-organized kits. Both approaches are completely appropriate.

The goal is simple: create a space where healing feels supported, not stressful.

Final Thoughts

Plastic surgery is a meaningful step — but preparation is what allows the experience to feel calm, organized, and positive.

When you take the time to prepare your body and your environment, you’re not just reducing anxiety — you’re actively supporting your recovery and your results.
